How to Build a Supplement Stack That Works
By Funmi Bakare
If you've caught the wellness bug, you might find yourself staring at a counter full of supplement bottles every morning. But more isn't always better. Here's how to build a smart, efficient stack.
What Is a Supplement Stack?
A supplement "stack" is simply a combination of supplements taken together to support specific health goals. The key is choosing products that complement each other without overlap or negative interactions.
The Foundation Stack (For Almost Everyone)
Before adding anything specific, most people benefit from:
1. A Quality Multivitamin
Fills nutritional gaps in your diet. Especially important if you don't eat a perfectly balanced diet every day (and who does?).
2. Vitamin D3 + K2
As we discussed in our Vitamin D article, deficiency is common even in sunny Nigeria. K2 ensures calcium goes to your bones, not your arteries.
3. Omega-3 (Fish Oil or Algae Oil)
Anti-inflammatory, supports brain function, heart health, and joint mobility. If you don't eat fatty fish 2-3 times per week, supplementation is recommended.
4. Magnesium
Involved in 300+ enzymatic reactions. Helps with sleep, stress, muscle recovery, and energy production. Most people are deficient.
Goal-Specific Add-Ons
For Energy & Focus
- B-Complex vitamins
- Ashwagandha
- CoQ10
For Skin & Beauty
- Collagen peptides
- Vitamin C
- Zinc
For Gut Health
- Probiotics (multi-strain)
- Prebiotic fibre
- L-Glutamine
For Fitness & Recovery
- Creatine monohydrate
- Protein powder
- BCAAs (if plant-based diet)
Timing Matters
Morning with food: Multivitamin, B-Complex, Vitamin D, Iron
With meals: Omega-3, CoQ10, Collagen
Evening: Magnesium, Probiotics, Ashwagandha
Common Mistakes
- Taking everything at once (some nutrients compete for absorption)
- Ignoring interactions with medications
- Buying the cheapest option (bioavailability matters)
- Not being consistent (supplements need weeks to show effects)
- Taking too many (start simple, add one at a time)
Start Small
Don't try to build the perfect stack overnight. Start with the foundation, be consistent for a month, then assess what else you might need based on your specific goals and how you feel.
