A Beginner's Guide to Pet Supplements
By Dr. Ngozi Eze
As pet ownership grows in Nigeria, so does awareness about pet nutrition. But with so many products on the market, how do you know what your pet actually needs?
Do Pets Really Need Supplements?
If your pet is eating a balanced, high-quality diet, they may not need many supplements. However, there are situations where supplementation makes sense:
- Ageing pets — with joint stiffness or reduced mobility
- Pets on homemade diets — that may lack certain nutrients
- Breeds prone to specific conditions — (e.g., hip dysplasia in large dogs)
- Pets recovering from illness or surgery
- Active or working dogs — with higher nutritional demands
The Big Three: Supplements Worth Considering
1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil)
Probably the most universally beneficial supplement for pets. Omega-3s support:
- Healthy skin and coat (reduces shedding and itching)
- Joint health and mobility
- Heart and kidney function
- Brain development in puppies and kittens
2. Glucosamine & Chondroitin
Essential for joint health, especially in:
- Large breed dogs
- Senior pets showing signs of stiffness
- Active dogs prone to joint wear
Start early for prevention rather than waiting for problems to develop.
3. Probiotics
Gut health matters for pets too. Probiotics can help with:
- Digestive issues (gas, bloating, irregular stool)
- Immune system support
- Recovery after antibiotics
- Stress-related digestive upset
What to Avoid
- Human supplements — dosages and ingredients may be toxic to pets
- Mega-doses of vitamins — more is not always better
- Supplements without veterinary guidance — always consult your vet first
- Products without clear ingredient lists
How to Introduce Supplements
Start with one supplement at a time so you can monitor for any reactions. Mix it with food, start with a lower dose, and gradually increase to the recommended amount.
