Keeping Your Dog Healthy in Lagos Heat

By Dr. Ngozi Eze

Keeping Your Dog Healthy in Lagos Heat

Lagos heat is no joke — and your furry friend feels it even more than you do. Dogs can't sweat like humans, making them especially vulnerable to heat-related issues.

Understanding Heat Risk

Dogs regulate their body temperature primarily through panting and through their paw pads. In Lagos's humid heat, panting becomes less efficient because the air is already saturated with moisture.

High-risk breeds:

 • Flat-faced breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Shih Tzus)
 • Thick-coated breeds (Huskies, Chow Chows — yes, people keep them in Lagos!)
 • Senior dogs
 • Overweight dogs
 • Puppies

Hydration Is Everything

Always have fresh, clean water available. Consider:

 • Multiple water bowls in different rooms
 • A pet water fountain (dogs often prefer running water)
 • Adding ice cubes to water on very hot days
 • Carrying a portable water bowl on walks

Exercise Timing

Never walk your dog during peak heat (10am - 4pm). The pavement can burn their paw pads — if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

Best times for walks:

 • Early morning (before 8am)
 • Evening (after 5pm)
 • Keep walks shorter on extremely hot days

Nutrition in Hot Weather

Your dog's nutritional needs shift slightly in hot weather:

 • Appetite may decrease — this is normal. Don't force food.
 • Electrolyte balance — consider adding a pet-safe electrolyte supplement to water
 • Joint support — heat can increase inflammation. Omega-3 supplements help.
 • Immune support — heat stress can lower immune function. Probiotics can help.

Warning Signs of Heatstroke

Know these signs and act immediately:

 • Excessive panting or drooling
 • Glazed eyes
 • Rapid heartbeat
 • Bright red tongue
 • Vomiting or diarrhoea
 • Staggering or collapse

If you suspect heatstroke: Move to shade, apply cool (not cold) water, offer small amounts of water, and get to a vet immediately.

Creating a Cool Space

 • Ensure good ventilation or air conditioning
 • Provide a cool tile or mat for lying on
 • Never leave your dog in a parked car — even for "just a minute"
 • Consider a shallow wading pool for outdoor time

Keeping your pet healthy in Nigerian heat is absolutely manageable with the right knowledge and preparation. Your dog depends on you to make smart decisions about their wellbeing.
